Palazzo Medici Riccardi
The Ornate Theater of Secret Nobles

In the ancient neighborhoods of Florence, Italy,
lies a palace that witnessed the glory of the Renaissance——
the Medici Palace.
The Medici Palace, also known as the Medici-Riccardi Palace or Medici-Piccardi Palace, is a Renaissance palace in Florence. It was designed by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo de' Medici of the Medici family.
Constructed between 1445 and 1460, the palace is renowned for its rusticated ashlar and quarry-faced masonry. In 1659, the Medici family sold the palace to the Marquis of Piccardi, hence it is also called the "Medici-Piccardi Palace".

On the floor plan, the Medici Palace is an almost square structure (40×38 meters) with a square courtyard at its center. The palace has three floors, and the height of each floor further accentuates the grandeur of the entire building. The walls of the palace and the rusticated lower level are as solid as the walls of a castle.
Moreover, the new palace is fundamentally different from the family fortresses of previous centuries. The palace features a symmetrical structure, elegant windows, bordered doors, and the third floor is decorated with a broad, beautiful ancient Roman-style cornice. The plastic modeling of the cornice further highlights the solidity of the walls.

This Medici residence stands as the most iconic masterpiece of Michelozzo, serving as a template for noble family architecture in Florence during that era. The building consists of three floors—a structural design later adopted by other Florentine mansions.
The first floor’s facade is constructed with thick, rough-hewn stones, featuring prominent masonry joints. The second floor’s stones are slightly smoother, with narrower joints. The third floor is polished to a seamless finish, free of visible joints. The entire structure exudes a sense of archaic grandeur while maintaining an air of majesty.

Entering the building, one encounters a quiet and spacious classical courtyard that exudes changes in light and shadow while embracing the beauty of harmonious order. The designer is also Michelozzo from the mid-15th century. Echoing the exterior, the square floor plan features classical Corinthian columns supporting a semi-circular arcade. Unlike the rough masonry of the exterior, the walls here are adorned with elegant intaglio carvings in contrasting colors. The third floor consists of a semi-open-air corridor.

The Medici Riccardi Palace houses murals by Luca Giordano (1683-1685), which stand as iconic examples of beautiful and dreamlike Baroque art.

The Medici Palace is not merely an artistic treasure constructed from bricks and stones, but a frozen chronicle of history. It bears the rise and fall of the Medici family, witnesses the resplendence of the Renaissance, and records the magnificent transition of Baroque art. Every piece of rustic masonry and every exquisite mural wordlessly recount the bygone glory of Florence.

The story of the Medici Palace stretches through the ages, and a new chapter of art is about to unfold.
